Athens, GA- canning supplies?

Anybody know a good place in Athens for canning supplies? I understand it takes a special canning vessel with racks and such, also special tongs for removing the jars, etc.

Thanks!
Jimmy

I hate to say it, but Walmart in Oconee co. has the best selection of canning supplies. Our Kroger had none. I don't use the large canners, but instead I use my very large All-Clad stock pot for processing. And I don't use special tongs, either, just my regular ordinary tongs (wrap with something if you need gripping help). Here's a wonderful website by the National Center for Home Food Preservation, produced by UGA Extension folks: http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/

Jimmy, what are you going to can? Pickles and jellies don't require much more than you probably have in your house, as you don't "have" to process them. That being said, Target/Walmart/Kroger/etc generally have everything you need. I would recommend the USDA Guide to Home Preserving or Ball's Complete Book of Home Preserving as good references to have on hand.

This is a late reply, but I thought I'd chime in anyway: You absolutely must process pickles and jellies, unless you want to keep them in the fridge.

I looked everywhere for canning tools a couple years ago and finally found the basics—pot with rack, and the tongs—at Athens Hardware, 600 N. Thomas St. I've done canning in a stockpot without the rack or the tongs, but those simple, cheap tools make the whole process _a lot_ easier. (In a pinch, though, wrap the ends of regular tongs with rubber bands to help grip the jars.) Jars and lids are available at just about any grocery store in the area.
