Definitely earns a return visit. I had an exceptionally juicy and tasty half chicken. The skin had a surprising snap, crackle, pop when biting through it indicating that all of the fat had been rendered, leaving only a wonderfully tasting protective shell to the inside. My friend had good tasting, lean, but still moist, sliced brisket. Both had smoky overtones, but not overpowering.
As pleased as I was with the meat, this is one bbq place I could go and do only sides. We both had very good green beans cooked with ham and onion, I had delicious potato salad and my friend had some of the creamiest mac-n-cheese that I've ever tasted. They also had standards of cole slaw, corn, and beans. I believe baked potatoes are available and reportedly, fried okra is made to order.
There were 2 sauces - one "normal" and one "hot" - but the "hot" was pretty mild. Both had a thin consistency for my preference, but they each were tasty in their own right. The usual suspects were one the condiments bar.
I would have loved to try the peach cobbler - one of a couple of desserts - but as it were, I was taking a to-go box. Maybe next time. I did have a small cone of soft serve ice cream - ($.50). Nah, not again - icy crystals don't do it for me.
Serve yourself rolls are available with real butter - not the fake stuff. Unfortunately, the rolls were on the stale side – maybe because we were there around 5:30 p.m., just before the onslaught of Fri. night patrons arrived. 3 trays of fresh rolls appeared about half way through our meal.
Beginning about 6:00 pm, there was a steady flow of people picking up to-go orders with a few staying to eat in the larger dining area adjacent to the smaller dining/entry/order/pay area.
I haven't tried the fried catfish, so cannot comment on that.
RED BARN BBQ

Originally a saddle/tack shop, this little red barn has been transformed into a bbq house that is worthy of calling itself bbq! I’ve had the sliced brisket, pulled pork and chicken. With the exception of the chicken, portions were plentiful. The beef was trimmed (as I watched) of all excess fat, but while very flavorful, was a little on the dry side -- still a good, mild smoke flavor though. The pork was the "softest" and tastiest I've ever had and almost would melt in your mouth. The chicken, though small and a bit greasy on the skin, was also tasty and very moist.
There were about 7 - 8 sides. All looked good. We had slaw, fried okra and corn on the cob. The cotc was very good, but the other 2 lacked much flavor -- odd for cole slaw to have no taste.
They offer 2 rather thin sauces. One is somewhat spicy, but not what I’d call hot. The other, unusual for TX bbq, is a sweet sauce with an underlying taste of ginger. Go figure!
The bananna puddin' is very rich, but a little too sweet for me. Secret ingredient: Sweetened condensed milk.
As good as the bbq is, my biggest complaint is the service of the pulled pork. They like to “sneak” in a considerable amount of the outer “bark”. A little’s good, a lot, not. So, should you visit, keep an eye on that. Additionally, the employees are some of the most impersonal sorts that I’ve ever come across. Odd since the owner, Van, will talk your ear off about his que-ing “process” – happy to share details such as his use of Pecan wood as opposed to oak or mesquite.
When passing, I've seen the sign so often I don't pay attention anymore; but I think on Mondays, it is still all you can eat. I've never been, so don't know the price.
