Local Eating in Apsen

Apologies to all if this board doesn't contemplate Colorado. That said, I'll be meeting a bunch of friends for a long weekend in Aspen, and am curious what the food scene is there. I'm less interested in haute cuisine -- I live in NYC and have tons of choices in that regard -- but am curious to know if there are any regional specialties to explore, diners not to miss, etc. And of course, the proverbial "place the soldier home on leave goes to first." Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, all.

"Breakfast in America" is awesome!! Thats a Diner style place. in El Jebel.

"Italian Underground" in Glenwood is one I like. Reasonably priced, quite good and sweet atmosphere. You almost expect to see "Wise Guys" or indeed, a Mob killing.

And "The Bayou"(sp?) a Cajun place in Glenwood. 1star is spicy, 2 stars is hot, 3 stars is hurt me... do NOT eat the Voodoo Shrimp... thems a 4 star dish. They have a very decent Seafood Gumbo. I dont like Jeagermiester myself... but if you remind the manager he likes to do that sort of thing, he walks around with a spray bottle spraying Jeager in patrons mouths.

Aspenites do eat in Glenwood (and those, plus Juicy Lucy, are favorites), but they often combine it with errands like big box shopping, getting an oil change or going to the dentist. It is only fair to warn SaltPeter that Glenwood Springs is more than 40 miles from Aspen, and I'm guessing that most visitors going to Aspen for a long weekend might not be inclined to make an 80-mile roundtrip for dinner. Carbondale is about 10 miles closer to Aspen, which makes it "only" about a 60-mile roundtrip. Basalt is the most convenient of the Roaring Fork Valley lot.

Woody Creek Tavern is a must. Lots of great organic things to choose from. The Margaritas are awesome. Bring cash or check, they do not take plastic.

Cache Cache is a staple for us - we ate there last night. If you eat in the bar, it's actually quite reasonable.

People like D19, but I think it is hit or miss.

DV options - 689 in Carbondale is great, as is Fischer's more casual Phat Thai down the street.

Go down Valley (Roaring Fork) for a real Colorado food experience. If you try to interpret Colorado food and culture as some variance of NYC.you will be disappointed. Do a search on Basalt and Carbondale to find the more interesting establishments. By the way, the locals in the High Country probably know as much as you do about NYC food.

You've got that right. 5-star prices, 0-star food. Aspen, for all intents and purposes, sucks.

Aspen offers a lot of NY-style high-end eateries. Most Aspen classics are gone -- pushed out by high rents and a fickle dining public. Locals are now eating downvalley in Basalt -- more affordable. REgional specialties tend toward lamb, elk, trout, seasonal produce, peaches -- served in many ways in various restaurants. I haven't been there since last Xmas -- and then, we stayed w/ friends in Snowmass and not in Aspen.
