<content>Oddly enough, I was in the Little Tokyo Marukai and they had individual bottle of Mexican coke for (I believe) $1.29 apiece. The recently mentioned Don Rogelio's Tex-Mex restaurant in Lennox has it, but it costs something like $2.00. These prices don't include those California CRV, etc. I also saw Mexican Sprite at Don Rogelio's too. </content>

<content>HFCS WARNING!!! There are 12oz Mexican Cokes in brand new thinner glass bottles (labeled "no retornable") that DO contain HFCS, and 12oz ones in old, re-used thick glass bottles (labeled "retornable") that are cane sugar only. The paper translation stickers mean nothing...they are generic customs labels that often read "high fructose corn syrup and/or sucrose", though I have found some that read "sucrose" only and the product inside DEFINITELY contains HFCS and tastes terrible. Why is this? I don't know, but when I tasted the brand new bottles available in Costco, etc last year something wasn't right, so i went to my favorite Mexican lunch truck who aways served the old "beater bottles" and realized that those were the REAL THING and tasted great.
I also checked the bottle caps which, if you can read them, show the actual bottling plant in Mexico where the bottles were filled. Since I am a Mexican Coke addict, I have now found that all thick-glass "retornable" bottles from way down in Mexico (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Acapulco, Chihuahua, etc) are the real deal, while the ones bottled in Tijuana, Mexicali, and any labeled FEMSA are definitely HFCS or a blend...

I collect the bottle caps from the various bottlers...most have totally unique designs, many have the price in Pesos painted on the cap.

Also, avoid all plastic-bottled Mexican Coke, as well as throw-away glass with the label embossed (not painted), as these all contain HFCS.
I read an article recently that made me worry about the long-term availability of pure cane sugar coke from Mexico...the NAFTA treaty was modified in January 2008 to allow more importation of Mexican cane sugar to the US, but only if Mexico allows an equivalent amount of HFCS to be exported to Mexico. What do you think they are going to do with that HFCS? FEMSA Bottling already uses at least a blend of it, more to come. Sad that such a simple pleasure has turned into a complex, political nightmare. At least friends of mine in the Latino Community woke me up to this mess, and they turned me on to the liquor stores that carry the good stuff.
As far as the "Medio Litro" (16.9oz) bottles, I have found a mixed bag...some of the brand new bottles seemed to be cane sugar, and the ones I tried were bottled in Monterrey. YMMV.
The only place (other than a few downtown LA liquor stores, Mexican restaurants and lunch trucks) I have found the genuine, returnable, thick-glass pure cane sugar 12oz bottles on the westside is Silky Smooth in the Beverly Center
www.silkysmoothcreamery.com
A bit pricey there, but for westsiders it's worth it to avoid dealing with downtown LA traffic and wasting gas. Plus, you can't exactly phone around and verify what type of bottles the liquor stores carry. BTW, Silky Smooth had Mexican cane sugar Sprite, Squirt, Fresca, and Pepsi last time I was there, all in the thick reusable bottles.

Chowhounders---do you know of any sources of these reuseable thick glass genuine cane sugar 12oz Cokes that will sell by the case cheap, rather than by the single bottle? Too bad the 12oz Costco &amp; Sams Club ones are HFCS phony Cokes--the case price is a real deal. If you find new Medio Litro bottles that are definitely pure cane sugar (taste test, not label) by the case cheap, please share with everyone.</content>

<content>Um, the cases that I buy at Costco are specifically labeled as "made with pure cane sugar." They taste like the real deal (I can't stand regular Coke). And they're in bottles labeled no retornable. I don't know what the deal with the stuff you got was, but I'm fairly confident that what I buy there is HFCS free.</content>

<content>The latino community warned me about this after I had tasted some really nasty brand new bottles from Costco. So it isn't just one bad batch I may have stumbled upon. However, since there are 31 states in Mexico (plus DF Mexico City), and there are approx. 14 Coca Cola bottling plants in Mexico, there are 3 different Coke formulations that can potentially be bottled: Pure Cane Sugar, a Cane Sugar/HFCS Blend, and pure HFCS. The only one I know for sure uses at least a blend of HFCS is FEMSA. I also know that when I went to Mexicali last year and bought a case of plastic-bottled Coke from a Smart and Final store down there, assuming it was cane sugar, I was bummed when I got home and tasted it--similar to the nasty American HFCS stuff, with a slight rust tone (the water). And, the bad-tasting Costco stuff I had last year was bottled in Tijuana. An HFCS blend can play tricks with you--tastes better than American Coke, but is not quite right. Especially when you compare side-by-side with either a genuine thick-bottle pure cane Coke, or a Kosher-for-Passover Coke which is definitely pure sucrose (maybe beet sugar though, tastes a bit different than the Mexican cane sugar cokes, but both are great)... Conclusion---if you find brand new bottles that taste identical to the thick glass used bottles from deep down in Mexico, please share with us the bottler on the cap. Hey, if we identify the pure cane sugar bottlers and only buy theirs, we all win. Again, those paper labels are often wrong...I bought some cane sugar Sprite in a thick, used glass bottle that was definitely pure cane sugar by taste and mouthfeel, and the english-language sticker said "high fructose corn syrup" only--did not mention sucrose. The stickers are there for customs purposes, not a precise ingredients list. Pure Taste, terrific mouthfeel and a proven 100% cane sugar bottler shown on the cap--THAT is how to identify 100% cane sugar Coke from Mexico.
Here are interesting articles on the subject:
Bad News from 1996:
http://www.beverage-digest.com/editorial/121396mex.html
Good news from 2002 -- Mexico taxes HFCS:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EUY/is_3_8/ai_82105431
Bad news from 2006, tax is lifted, and proof that FEMSA uses HFCS:
http://www.geocities.com/jonclark500/stories/coke.html
And mixed news from CHOW:
http://www.chow.com/grinder/tag/hfcs
And we are supposed to believe the Corn Lobby? Yeah, right...

Now you see how complicated this is? Add to that the possibility that any Mexican Bottler might switch to HFCS or a blend at any time unbeknownst to us, until we open a bottle and something "just doesn't taste right"... heck, just get some Australian Coke and call it a day-- a 'Goodaye Mate!"
PS--there is one other choice but very expensive and just a once-in-a-while treat...Belgian Coke in little 7oz glass bottles. Only place I've found them so far is that Silky Smooth ice cream shop in the Beverly Center. As a CocaCola connoisseur, the Belgian Coke is "the Nectar of the Gods"...

<content>The genuine pure cane sugar cokes are often shipped very dirty, with mud &amp; dust on the bottles. They are sort-of "smuggled" on exposed trucks, since CocaCola USA does not want them imported here to compete with their phony HFCS crap. Also, since the handling can be rough, the painted metal caps often get scraped on top, making them look used.
As far as I know, it is impossible to reuse a cap. Just make sure the seal is not broken, it still has fizz, and the expiration date on the bottle is recent, and you should be good to go. Try to read the fluted side of the cap to determine where it was bottled. Once you taste a good one, you will want to get it from that same bottler in the future.</content>

<content>I've been buying Mexican Coke @ the Inglewood Costco for the last two years &amp; when I went in there last week they said they no longer carry it &amp; that none of their stores have it. It this true? I am fairly certain it is real Mexican Coke as the first ingredient listed on the stick-on label is sugar as well as on the bottle cap. It was bottled in Mexicali &amp; definitely has a clean non-HFCS flavor. Any other places in the South Bay to buy Mexican Coke? Thanks.</content>
