Olympia Cafe, Southampton, PA

As a frequent diner of the Olympia Cafe in Southampton, PA, I must sing the praises of this little restaurant. You would practically drive right past this place, since it's tucked into a little strip center just at the corner of County Line Road at Second Street Pike in Southampton (Huntingdon Valley?), Pennsylvania. The decor inside is basic ... booths and tables, a smoking area/bar to one side of the restaurant and a large non-smoking dining area to the other. The food here is delicious and the portions are huge. Most dinners come with choice of soup, salad, bread, entree with two sides, and dessert! Prices average about $15 for all this, some higher, some lower, obviously. They have terrific specials each night, and the specials are clearly posted on a board as you walk in, and prices are also clearly stated (and not overly expensive!).
The food is really quite delicious - I haven't had a bad dinner yet. I don't know why this place isn't more crowded on weekends, but there's never a wait for a table on a Saturday night. Just down the street is an Italian restaurant (Maggio's) that, in my opinion, is loud, crowded, averages a 30-minute wait, and you get half the food for more money than what you'd pay at the Olympia. Why would anyone go there????
If I had to share any negative comments about this restaurant, the only thing I would say is that the chef needs to be more flexible. He absolutely refuses to substitute anything on the "specials" menu. For example, if you wanted the filet steak special, but "without the bed of spinach" - he won't do it! No how. No way. Not a chance. Even the waitresses complain about his stubborness. I'm not so sure why he's so stubborn. "Isn't the customer always right?"
But - don't hold the chef's stubborness against the restaurant, because the food really is delicious, the restaurant is clean, the prices are great, the wait staff is friendly and there's never a wait. It's definitely worth the trip. And, if you check out www.myphl17.com, you might even find a "buy one get one free" gift certificate (pay $25, get $50 worth of gift certificates in return). I don't know if that special is still running on myphl17.com, but it's worth checking it out.
As a follow-up to my previous post - I was at the Olympia about a month ago and learned that the previous chef that ran the kitchen is no longer there. There is a new chef now (who used to work for the old chef) and IMHO, is an even better chef than his predecessor. And best yet ... he WILL make substitutions to the daily specials!
It's interesting how even the servers seem more upbeat since the departure of the previous chef.
Why go anywhere else - this place is a "win/win" for good food, great service and terrific prices in Montgomery County, PA!!
