Best Chocolate Cake in the city
Hi
Looking for the best old fashion chocolate layered cake with frosting. I would make it myself but I do not own a mixer. Need for a birthday party this weekend. Ella's makea good one but only offer it by the slice once or twice a week. Thanks

Delessio's is known here as having great chocolate cake and other goodies. I'm a couple of years out of date with his place but I'm sure others will say if it's still as good as ever.

re: ChowFun_derek
Thanks all. I went to Arizmedi and bought a slice of the chocolate cake with choc. frosting and I resisted getting a slice of pizza too (love their pizza).
This is the perfect chocolate cake. Downed it with a glass of milk which made a perfect lunch. The frosting is especially good.
I ordered one for Sat. $26.00, the lady behind the counter said it should feed about 12. Its nice to know the simplest things are still available.
Thanks again.

They have a couple of dozens retail outlets all over town. Click on the SF county image for a list:

Arizmendi's is my favorite, hands down. I was there just the other day, and I noticed they now also have chocolate cake with (I think) white chocolate frosting. And they also had the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Did I buy a piece? Of course!!
I do like Delessio's very, very much BUT I do not like their chocolate cake at all. It's almost all ganache, which I find really, really gross. It's like eating a couple sticks of butter with some chocolate and sugar mixed in. I love a good chocolate frosting and plenty of it, but this is a gross imbalance. Not recommended. I like almost everything else they make.

re: Atomica
The round chocolate cake with white frosting might be their malted vanilla cake. The chocolate cake is lighter and crumblier in this malted vanilla cake than it is in the triple chocolate cake (choco cake / choco frosting / choco frills), and the frosting is heavily malted. It's presented with a round thin chocolate wafer that covers the entire footprint of the cake, dusted with white polka dots of powdered sugar. I love that cake.
It might fit the diner theme that the OP is requesting. While the malt flavor is decidedly modern and foodie-ish, it does look kinda retro with the polka dots, and it is round with two cake layers.
I agree that their triple chocolate cake -- or is it the chocolate tower cake? -- is not theme-appropriate for the OP, and I agree with you that it can be a little much, but sometimes I like the stick of chocolately sugared butter taste.

Haven't tried it yet, but there have been a number of positive reports on the board that Arizmendi on Irving sells a good chocolate. cake. Even with all its changes, Just Desserts makes a good one. I don't know if they have any bakeries open though or are just selling through markets now.

Just Desserts' chocolate cake is good. Very much like what a good home baker would make. Their only remaining cafes are at the Metreon and SFO but you can get them at lots of other places including Costco:
