Olympic Cocktails

  • 1

We broke out the cocktail books to find some classic drinks with Olympic-themed names in honor of the 2008 games. We are sharing these in the hope that others can contribute other ideas.

The first up, with an admitted home town bias, is the Americano. The Americano is a bittersweet cocktail that is easy to make and easy to drink.

Americano:
1 1/2 oz. Campari
1 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth (we use Carpano)

Pour over ice in an old fashioned glass. Stir briefly to chill. Enjoy.

"The tradition of handing out Olympic medals began with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, where winners got silver, seconds got bronze and third place got zip. In the intervening 112 years, the coveted awards have been rectangular, ridged, doughnut-like, gilded and--for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games--shaped like an amorphous blob. (Time Magazine)"

While Winter Olympic medals have no standard design, Summer medals almost always depict Nike, the winged goddess of victory, on their front in some fashion. That leaves the host cities the opportunity to design the medals' back.

This year the Beijing host committee chose to represent Chinese culture by placing an inlaid ring of jade on each medal. Jade represents honor and virtue in Chinese culture and, since you can't have a Olympic cocktail story without at least one drink that relates to the host country, we present you with the Jade cocktail.

Jade:
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1 teaspoon bar sugar
dash of triple sec
dash of green creme de menthe (we use Marie Brizard)
1 1/2 oz. white run

Pour all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Enjoy.

Of course, athletes don't go for the jade, they "go for the gold." And while the gold medals for the 2008 games are actually silver covered with about 6 grams of 24-karat gold, they still represent the pinnacle of athletic competition. In honor of the athletes, we are serving up the Golden Dream.

Golden Dream:
1 1/2 oz. Galliano
1 1/2 oz. orange juice
1 oz. triple sec
1 oz. heavy whipping cream

Pour all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake as hard as you can for 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Enjoy.

  1. You should include a few recipes that incorporate steroids - then they would be true Olympic cocktails!
