Yum Cha in Auckland
Who does the absolute best dim sum in Auckland?
Everywhere we have tried on recommendation has been a disappointment.
Any suggestions for small local restaurants with 'the best' dim sum?

it depends what type of thing you enjoy eating at yum cha I guess...
I am not so into the fried stuff (apart from the taro cake) and have yet to try chickens feet. but Grand Harbour does very good dim sum (har gao, shu mai etc).
It is not small there but there is a fast turnover (=fresh) and a lot of choice.
There are some photos of their dim sum here:

When I worked in the city a few years ago my Chinese friend always used to take us to Ding How, 55 Albert St (entrance off St Patrick's Square). This one gets very busy at lunchtimes.
There's another one I've been to that's always pretty busy but not small - Dynasty in Wakefield St. I'm not a great connoisseur of yum cha (tho' I know what i *don't* like!), so if you find a great one, do post the details here.

in my research for an upcoming trip - I saw Sunshine (Viaduct) listed as the top place in Auckland for Yum Cha. Anyone have anything to add?

I grew up in Auckland and Sunshine is the best Yum Cha in Auckland, it could be a little pricey for some as it's in Viaduct (very nice area by the harbour where the expensive restaurants are) but it's worth it. They have a lot of variety and it's really fresh. Plus if you go in a group you get to try all different sorts of yummy dishes coz they're so delicious makes you wanna try them all.
It's clean compared to most other Asian restaurants, services quite good. Bookings are recommended even on weekdays (weekends are essential and it gets pretty crazy too). I've been living in Melbourne (Australia) for almost 4 years now but I'd always visit Sunshine if I go back Auckland and want Yum Cha. Personally, I think Sunshine outrate ALL the Yum Cha I've tried in Melbourne.

Avoid Grand Park and Ding How - the service at Grand Park is horrible - the trollies never get around to you if you are sitting at a table at the back. Sunshine is really good but serves very big portions - good for large groups. Dragon Boat in The Atrium is top quality, but not cheap. Sunny Town in Newmarket has a huge range of non-dumpling items. My favourite though would have to be Pearl Garden in Newmarket - good yum cha, lovely service and decor.
