Need some input on wine choice for wedding
I am getting married in Kauai at the end of the month (8/30) and I wanted to get some educated opinions from the fantastic folks on chowhound wine boards.
We're having a luau dinner at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu and the selection we have available for wine is not outstanding, but will do nicely.
I need to choose one of the following for a white:
- Villa Maria, Sauvignon Blanc, "Private Bin", Marlborough, New Zealand. 2007
- Kenwood Sauvignon Blanc, CA '06
- Benzinger Sauvignon Blanc, CA '05
- Rock Rabbit, Sauvignon Blanc, Central Coast, California
- Fish Eye, Pinot Grigio, California
- Danzante, Pinot Grigio, delle Venezie, Italy
- Clos du Bois, Pinot Grigio, Sonoma County, California
- Ecco Domani, Pinot Grigio, Italy
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance,
I have not had the Rock Rabbit, Danzante or the CdB PG, but of the others my favorite would be the Villa Maria. We like most NZ SB, and this one shares many of the characteristics we like. None of the others would offend me as a party or wedding wine. We drink both the Fish Eye and Ecco Domini PG (usually when there are not many other choices on the wine list) but find them fairly pedestrian and unexceptional.
re: maria lorraine
Ditto... are those the only whites available ??
basically there are just 2 wines.... pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc.
Among other things, can you check and see if a riesling is available? I think your guests may find it more enjoyable to sip on it's own than sauvignon blanc (for example), and a better match with the likely flavor notes at the luau.
< <Are those the only white wines available?> Thats what OP said!>
There might be more choices than what's listed. This is a huge resort, with about five restaurants. Granted, the resort is trying to keep a ceiling on a cost per bottle for the event, but I'm guessing that with all those restaurants, more options are available in same price range as those above.
What's the menu?
Luau does sound like Riesling......
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!
Second of all, I've stayed at that hotel -- LOVE IT!!!
Third of all, ffrom the choices listed, EASY, the Villa Maria! Easy choice for my palate!
Thanks so much for the input and the warm wishes. I will choose the Villa Maria!
And to clear up the other ?'s, those are the only WHITE selections available. They were alternatives to the Kendall Jackson Chard, which I do not like. We will be serving this white along with the reds the hotel has avail.
