Point Pleasant

About the only thing worth eating on the boardwalk IMHO, are fresh cut french fries and some waffles with ice cream. Plan on spending the day at the beach and taking the kids on the rides. After that we would like to hit some place good for dinner. Any kid friendly and chowhound friendly places to eat for an early dinner? We've hit a Cajun place in Manasquan that was pretty good. Forget the name but was hoping to find something new. Cuisine - Open to anything. The only requirement is good, real good chow. Any suggestions?

Surf Taco with Cod Fish rocks! It was the highlight of my point pleasant trip.

    2. I second Surf Taco. Go with my kids all the time, but usually to the Belmar location which is much roomier than the one in Point Pleasant. There's also one in Manasquan. The surf tacos with fried cod are really good.

Red's outdoor deck for raw bar items and lobster rolls is good, but not much to choose from for the kids. You can get the kids half-way decent pizza at Joey Tomatoes on the boardwalk before heading over and hit the Lighthouse for italian ices for dessert.

My kids are quite the mini chowhounds. Lobster rolls sound good. Where is Red's?

      2. or there is also The Shrimp Box. Caters more to a senior crowd, but who cares...the stuffed shrimp are great! Get there early because they have long lines in the summer.

Of course, my utilate pic is The Shipwreck Grill in Brielle, but if I remember...I think you took your wife there...maybe I am wrong..but that place is great!

I'd second The Shrimp Box. My family has been going there for at least 35 years, and although it's changed hands several times, the food is ALWAYS good. It's on the inlet with lots of large windows, so the kids (and you) will enjoy seeing all the fishing boats of various sizes going in and out. VERY kid friendly. Very good salad bar. The crusted shrimp with the lobster sauce is AWESOME. The "Sunset Dinners" (Early Bird Special) are a terrific deal.

        2. Wound up hitting Red's. I had the lobster roll which was pretty solid, really enjoyed it. My wife had grilled cajun sword fish bites over a salad with a good dressing that I can;t recall, also really good. Grabbed an order of fresh cut fries, calamari, and shrimp cocktail for my 4 and 2 year old. This was exactly what I was looking for. I cringed at the thought of boardwalk food, mediocre pizza, sausage, etc. Thanks for the rec.
