O.K., I dropped by Liverpool Lil's for a burger after a hiatus of living in Europe for the last year. I didn't expect to pay $13 for a burger with fries. i understand that is the standard price for a good burger in San Francisco. I think I'll get back to Europe and hoard my euros.

Extreme tenderness is, of course, a hallmark of Wagyu beef, and it's probably better appreciated as a steak. I actually usually go for the standard beef burger, which is about $8 with fries. I have no problem with Rogue's fries.

I hated the burger at Rogue. The beef tasted like cardboard and the bun was stale. The fries were ok for a pub, but not a gastropub, which this item seems to be aiming for. The beers are great, but the food aims high and hits between middle and low.

With frozen yogurt making a comeback, can fern bars be far behind? They can update them and call them green bars - the plants contributing to the betterment of our planet. Then they could recycle all that wood and plastic Tiffany lamps from the 70's fern bars ... they must be in thrift shops somewhere. BTW, if you want a true fern bar, there is the Ground Round in Pinole ... right down to the people who orginally frequented fern bars.

I guess a $13 burger doesn't surprise me anymore since most in a restaurant are running $10 some like Roast Haus around $25. What surprises me is a joint like Liverpool Lil's would charge that much.

Yeah, burgers were the big trend here for a little while, and most places still take pride in theirs. But now we're really into pizza. If the restaurant doesn't offer pizza on the menu, it's probably passe, just so you're not out of the loop. The same slightly ripped off feeling will apply to the pizzas as well since you'll always remember that great slice you had somewhere else for half the cost. But at least they're still cheaper than many other items on the menu.

This may not be rocket science, but we figured that Boca Steak house in Ignatio specializes in Argentine beef. They have to trim the steaks daily. Scraps go into hamburger. Hamburger about 1/2 lb to 3/4 lb, w/ duck fat fries (can they still be served, after the fat police get to work?). For $ 10 a really good burger. Anything below that price may be inferior.

No mention of NOPA's burger? This is by far the best burger I've had in SF (other than my own homemade ones). They house grind Marin Sun beef. You can get it with cheddar, blue or gruyere. I went thru a big blue phase, but lately I've just been digging on the cheddar. And of course you gotta get the housemade bacon. And it comes with fries which are amongst the best in the city too. Ordered medium-rare and they nail it nearly every time. It's ~$16 after adding bacon and cheese.
