Out of town friends are coming to the city and want classic italian. It is not my strong suit so are there any recommendations? I was thinking Nanni or Il Gattopardo. Thoughts?

If your friends enjoy a lively, loud, busy, touristy-cum-locals atmosphere, you won't do better than Carmines. Great for a crowd that enjoys ordering and sharing lots of dishes. The Times Sq location is heavy on tourists while the UWS version is more locals - but both are fabulous for red sauce Italian - chicken parm to die for....and the UWS offers take out too.
