Shortys on Powerline (just south of Hillsboro)
Just had lunch at the Shorty's on Powerline and it was atrocious. Had the spare ribs and they were tough and almost inedible (not fall off the bone like Park Avenue BBQ). Their "special" BBQ sauce was terrible. I opted for the stuff in the squeeze bottle. Needless to say, I'm not going back.
I had the opposite reactions from both of you when I last went to Shorty's. My friend had the spare ribs, and we both thought they were moist and tender - they pulled from the bone with little resistance at all. I had the pork and brisket, and while the brisket was OK the pork was dreadful. It was like eating shredded junk mailers. The special sauce is disgusting, too, and I'm not a fan of their regular BBQ sauce either. It's way too sweet, but then I'm kind of over those thick tomato-based sauces.
Anyway, if anything, our contrasting experiences prove that you simply can't expect consistency from this place. I think the franchise jump has really hurt the quality at Shorty's.
After reading these Shorty's reviews, I can safely say that I am not excited about a new Shorty's opening up on PGA and Prosperity in Palm Beach Gardens. The website makes it appear to be a made for masses type BBQ place like Sonny's. Ho-hum....so many below average Q joints to choose from. Park Avenue is below average IMO.
Shane's Rib Shack is part of the Raving Blands corporate profile. Expect nothing special from Atlanta's Raving Blands concepts. RB destroyed the original Flying Biscuit concept and they recently dumped Moe's Southwestern Grill after it had spread like wildfire across the south. Major mediocrity at it's best.
