Thurston's Lobster Pound--Bernard (MDI), Maine
Okay. There are perhaps thousands of lobster pounds in coastal Maine. And, there are dozens on Mount Desert Island. And, everyone has their favorites. Let me just cast my vote for Thurston's, on picturesque Bernard harbor on MDI's 'quietside' Enter Thurston's, surrounded by boats, lobster traps and, of course, lots of vehicles...including Thurston's own delivery truck with the "Lobstah" license plate. Order before you sit: choose your lobsters from the pound. Small (1-1 1/4 lbs), medium (1-1/4 to 1-1/2 lbs) or large. Hard or soft shell, depending upon season. Prices are very reasonable this season (local papers give extensive coverage to the lobster market this summer: abundant supply and fewer tourists results in prices of $19-$21 for a one pound boiled lobster at most places). But the highlight, for us, were the lobster rolls. Stuffed with 5 ounces of lobster meat and just a touch of mayo and spices on a lightly toasted roll, priced at $10.50, their lobster rolls were like paradise.
Enjoy one with a local ale, an ear of corn, some cole slaw and you've got a perfect meal.

Ate at Thurston's Thursday, 8/8/08. Had a 2 1/2 lb. soft-shell lobster. My first soft-shell. Great sweet meat and the shell can be hand cracked. The meat comes out easily. Good steamers(clams), corn & slaw as well as their homemade beer make for a great feed. Highly recommended. A beautiful drive out to the SW of Mt. Desert Island. What more could you want.

Thanks for this recommendation. I will definitely check it out, especially since we share a name. I need to get some sort of souvenir from the place - like a full belly. It is easy for a tourist to get onto the island?
