Looking for a great, cheap meal stop between Bay Area and North Lake Tahoe (i.e. Hwy 80). We love Awful Annie's in Auburn, but hoping to find something new.

Next time I'm heading out that way, I plan to stop at Pure Grain Bakery & Cafe in Vacaville. I've had their bread at Speisekammer in Alameda, it's the best German rye around.

    Daimo in Richmond.

Cueva's in Dixon, if reports that it went out of business were wrong.

Past Dixon, you're in California board territory, so you might ask there as well.

Val's is still the the Bay Area, but since for us its past the Bay Bridge & Oakland traffic, we'll often stop there. If its a hot day their malts are particularly appealing.

If you cross the Bay Bridge and pass through Hayward, you're taking an odd route to Tahoe.

Ikeda's, in Auburn, CA, is a dependable spot...burgers, sandwiches, etc on one side and a market on the other...I've stopped there a few times and it's in perfectly serviceable, if not the absolute bestest ever...

13500 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603 (Luther Road Exit off 80, I think)

Their pies and baked goods are quite highly regarded, also.

and save room for the best ever fruit pies, with what fruit the family has grown and harvested fresh ... should not be missed. or stop on the way back and bring a pie home.

We always pick up a fruit pie for our first night's dessert in the condo. Always good -- esp if you pick up some ice cream when you get to Tahoe. And a pie on the way home is not a bad idea!
