Assuming that by "brunch" you mean breakfast-type dishes at lunchtime, La Note.

Can you give us some more details about what kind of food you're looking for in what kind of atmosphere, and narrow down "East Bay" a little?

ok, to clarify, just looking for a place in oakland or berkeley that would offer breakfast and lunch items at say 11a on a weekday, which is before a lot of places start their lunch service. thanks!

La Note serves both breakfast and lunch items from 8am until 2:30.

Per their Web site 900 Grayson stops breakfast at 10:45, and starts lunch at 11:30, but that sounds wrong. I don't think they close in between.

I think that the website is accurate, actually -- I was in for breakfast one weekday morning, and they stopped taking breakfast orders at right around 10:40 (I walked in right then, which is why I remember), and I'm pretty sure that they didn't take any lunch orders until 11:30, and I don't know if they were open at that time to people who weren't finishing up their meals.

They close the kitchen to switch over to lunch service. People can hang out, but you can't order. Very annoying. The main reason I have stopped going there.

I agree, it's annoying. They didn't even tell us that until we'd been sitting for twenty minutes.

Here's a list of some Berkeley restaurants that serve breakfast.

Of those I know Gillman Grill serves breakfast all day till they close at 3. I'm guessing Bette's serves breakfast all day because I don't remember ever rushing there so I didn't miss breakfast hours. Fat Apple's serves breakfast until noon during the week and 2 on the weekends. I like Fat Apple's a lot.

If you venture over to nearby Albany, Sunnyside Cafe serves breakfast during lunch hours.

Bette's serves breakfast until they close at 2:30 (4:00 on weekends) and lunch from 11 on.

Second the recommendation for Gilman Grill in West Berkeley.

We enjoyed Rick & Anne's across from the Claremont (don't miss the red beet hash - yum!) Also Bette's Ocean View on 4th Street, but expect to wait for a table even on a weekday.

Down the way from La Note, Venus has good brunches/lunches, and extremely well-prepared bacon!

a second on venus. my favorite comfortable breakfast spot, nice and quiet on a weekday.
delicious biscuits. my husband always gets the "fried egg sandwich with white cheddar and chipotle mayo on wheat or sourdough" and optional "niman ranch ham or bacon."

Mama's Royal Cafe, Broadway, Oakland (Funky but good)

Cockadoodle Cafe in Old Oakland gets good reviews, is tasty and is casual. I like Caffe 817 a close block away, but not so brunchy...more cafe-y.

In addition, if you just want breakfast food, there's the Alameda coffee shop triumvirate of Ole's, Tillie's and Jim's.

Cafe M on 5th street near the 4th street shopping area can be good
