More Martinez munching: Copper Skillet Courtyard – the biscuits and gravy crawl, part 2
- rworange Aug 5, 2008 12:15 PM
The crawl started by accident at Mr. T’s Coffee Shop which has excellent biscuits and gravy
Copper Skillet also does the dish proud. White gravy spiked with lots of black pepper covers two large light biscuits. The gravy has lots of pieces of nicely browned breakfast sausage links.
Mr. T’s tastes more like the crumbled sausage is cooked with the gravy so it remains the champ, but both are good. Let’s say that Mr. T’s was so good it made me do some comparison tasting to see if anyone could top them.
The coffee at Copper Skillet is a little on the weak side, but the refills are generous. I might get the iced tea next time.
Breakfast is served all day and the menu is extensive.
A white board has specials. Monday through Friday there are $4.60 breakfast specials and $6.25 lunch specials
The discount breakfast specials are two eggs with
- hashbrowns, toast
- 2 slices of bacon or sausage with pancakes or French toast
The discount lunch specials were grilled chicken breast sandwich, hamburger, teriyaki salad, chicken Caesar, Greek salad, fish and chips and tomato stuffed with chicken salad.
Sunday specials included split pea soup with ham, chicken fried steak, calamari with 2 eggs, hash brows and toast. If I wasn't on a biscuits and gravy quest I probably would have ordered the calamari which I've never seen as a breakfast dish.
There is a very homey feel to this place. The son is taking over the business from the dad who still keeps an eye on the restaurant. The son was enthusiastically talking to some regulars and telling them how much he loves the restaurant.
The restaurant seats 54. Red and green booths line the walls of the knotty pine paneled restaurant. There are a few tables in the center. Next to the cash register are pictures colored by children.
There is no courtyard but an elevated corner loft called “The Jury Box” where Contra Costa County’s judges are said to have lunch every Wednesday
Coming next, biscuits and gravy at Peggs Western Grill … I did NOT save the best for last.
