Out of towners - Ladies looking for fun and trendy latin restaurants/lounges

We are two ladies (mid 30s) visiting NYC this weekend (Aug. 7-9). We are looking for fun, nice ambiance (energy) and trendy restaurants and lounges with latin food, music, and dancing. A friend suggested Rayuela (dinner) or Son Cubano (dinner and dancing).

We are staying downtown but very flexible with location and pricing.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the suggestions...I am torn between some of the great spots. It just means that there will be a couple of long nights in the city trying to make it to all the great locations. Oh well!

    Thanks again everyone.

Some friends and I went to Macondo (E. Houston & Allen thereabouts) last weekend for dinner and drinks, and had a very nice time. Focus is more on sharing small plates and the place was really busy (but not annoyingly so). Plus, the drinks are very inventive, very good.

I haven't been to Boca Chica in ages, but I remember it being a lot of fun - around 10pm the tables are pushed aside and crazy dancing ensues. The food's pretty good, too. It's cheap and friendly, but I wouldn't exactly call it trendy 'cause it's been around so long.

Rayuela's food (tapas or dinner) was good. Don't know about the music or scene. Asia de Cuba was also suggested. I have only been for drinks and it was too long ago to be helpful. I have heard mixed reviews on the food, it's known for the decor.

Son Cubano is a good choice. Look into Asia de Cuba, Ideya and Lucy's Latin Kitchen as well.
