Anneke Jans , Kittery Me
We had dinner at Anneke Jans in Kittery Saturday night. We have been several times in the past and found this visit similar. Arrived on time for our reservation and were given a choice of two different tables. We chose by the window ( the windows, which cover a larege part of the front of the restaurant were completely folded back so it is almost like being outside). Our waiter- Kenny- who has waited tables at many places in Southern Maine and was the manager at Hurricane in Kennebunkport for quite some time, was excellent as usual. The food was served rather quickly but spaced well enough to allow for enjoyment. The blueberry martini (vodka) was very good made with fresh blueberries. WE tried the fried olives, which were interesting- crisp on the outside- green olives with pimento on the inside, but not something I would order again. I had the wedge salad- with chopped egg, red onions and blue cheese and bacon, which was very good. DH had the mussels with red and yellow tomatoes. Delicious and the broth was excellent. For an entree I had what was described as halibut on a bed of chantrelles, lobster and fava beans but there were no fava beans- peas instead. A disapointment, but the dish was very nice, the halibut nicely seared and a thick, generous portion. DH had the braised lobster on a risotto cake. Good but not outstanding. We skipped desert.
I have to say that the food and service here is outstanding. However, the noise level is so bad that I will hesitate to return. Even sitting at the open window, it was hard to converse and the people at the next table were yelling at each other in order to be heard.
