Bookmarks broken once again?

Come on, guys -- you keep switching back and forth between a board being identified by a number and a name in its URL, and you render all previous bookmarks useless. As soon as we've adjusted, you switch back again.

If you can't make up your mind, at least build a redirect. It's not hard.

  1. We recently changed the first part of the URL to, but there is a redirect in place. Can you give us a specific example of the problem you're experiencing?

My old D.C. bookmark, after a couple of do-si-dos in which a number replaced the words, was:

It redirects to this, which is nonexistent:

Apparently we're back to numbers for now:

That first bookmark is from the old boards, before the 2006 redesign. If there was a redirect in place from it to the'boards/14 URL, it may have gotten broken in this new transition. Before last Friday, the proper URL for the DC boards would have been and there is a redirect from that to the current URL

I'm pretty darn sure it worked until last week, but whatever. You've proved my point about not supporting your previous programming either way.

I think it probably worked until last, week, yes, and got broken in last week's transition to a third URL structure. We are supporting our previous URL structure, but you're two iterations back at this point, unfortunately.

Oh come on now, how many sites can you think of out there that provide redirection for old URLs 2 months after a URL was changed, much less 2 years?! The URL changed once. You got a free 2 years of a broken URL being redirected to the new location. It's completely reasonable for a site to discontinue redirection of old links 2 years later.

It's gone back and forth. Not just back, not just forth. Don't act like a wise old sage looking back on the ages; consider the moment each time when the site failed to do the obvious 30-second bit of backward-compatibility programming.

It hasn't gone back and forth. it's changed twice, once two years ago
from this to this It sounds like, at that time, they put in a redirect that made the old URL work, which continiuted to work until the recent changes.

Now in the past week or so it's changed to this, and while there is a redirect from to, there's no longer a redirect from to to and I'm just surprised that anyone would expect one. Broken links are a fact of lilfe on the web, and the fact that there was a redirect that worked as long as it did is just gravy, IMO.
