Detroit coney island: Best time to visit Lafayette / American?

What's the best time during daytime to visit these joints if you don't want to worry about parking and the crowd?

What time is their last call? Do they really have one? I thought this place is open 24/7.

Not theirs, the bars' last call. 2:30 a.m. or later. :)

I've been there for lunch (noonish) during the week and on the weekend. Never really a wait. Jim's right, they're all about getting you in and out and onto the next customer. Yelling at each other all the while.

What are the "must-trys" at Lafayette apart from the coney?

I've never seen them either packed or empty. They're so fast (i.e., instantaneous) that a crowd isn't really an issue. As to the parking, I'd probably go during the day when you can get a meter--probably you can find one on Griswold or Lafayette anytime except evening rush hour. Feed meter conscientiously. If you don't want to park on the street, there's a garage a block south on Griswold on the right. Michigan People Mover stop is not far, either, but it's currently closed for repairs.
