CMH - ONE good Mexican Resto?
I must admit that I don't get out to Mexican Restaurants that much - I prefer to make it at home because it is cheaper (and dare I say, better?) than most places I have tried. I have tried all the chains: El Vaquero, Abuelo's, Mad Mex...
Last night someone suggested Mexican and we quickly ruled out El Vaquero and several others and settled on one because of its close proximity. They made their own corn and flour tortillas and the "molcajete" dishes were good but the mole was mind numbingly bad. I may be spoiled because I have had mole in Oaxaca but I don't expect that level in Columbus Ohio. The best way I can explain it is - gravy light tinged with cinnamon. And to top it all off, just as we were finishing (food still on our plates) a young boy (6 or 7?) walks behind us with his father. Just as he got behind us he spilled something all over our backs. I thought he had shook a can of soda and sprayed us, but it turns out it was... uh ...Vomit!
I am really fond of jamaica and make it often at home. I noticed it was on their menu and asked if it was house-made. The server responded that it was. I'm not saying that it wasn't but it tasted nothing like "fresh" and everything like the concentrate that you find in Mexican Markets.
It seems like restos have maybe one good dish but they are trying to do ALL Mexican rather than focus on a few well made preparations. I get bogged down on huge menus that are full of tacos, burritos etc.
Can anyone guide me to a restaurant that serves good Mexican food? I live close to many of them on Cleveland Avenue. I have not been to any on the west side for a while, so maybe there are some gems out there...
