Wausau (WI), Rhinelander (WI), Iron Mountain (MI)

I am taking a road trip in a week from Minneapolis through Wisconsin and up to the UP. Depending on when we hit the road, I figure we will want lunch somewhere between Wausau, Rhinelander, and Iron Mountain. I am prepared to eat early or late and go a little out of the way if there are any great recos. I am looking for some thing casual and quick that has great local flavor. Any advice is appreciated.

  1. In Wausau, I would recommend the Mint Cafe. My report on it from last fall follows:

"Another lunch was at the Mint Café, which certainly isn’t a secret by any means but is straight-up, classic and great diner food. I was in a salad phase, so got the taco salad, which was lighter and less greasy than the norm. I was, however, quite envious of my dining partner’s hot beef, which was a classic of the genre; also great milkshakes, burgers, etc. My favorite thing on the menu might have been the “Wisconsin Vegetable platter” which featured fried broccoli, fried cauliflower, and fried cheese curds. The kitchen was worth noting for turning out our 13-top’s food in an unbelievably short period of time."

I love it - in Wisconsin, cheese curds are a vegetable!

Seriously, though, thanks for the tip on the Mint Cafe. I love hot beef sandwiches (and hot turkey, too), so this is great info.

Have you been that way yet this year? We'll be in Wausau on Friday night en route back to Chicago, and I was just searching for somewhere to have dinner. Had also read about the Wagon Wheel .....
