I like Small Plates and Traffic Jam & Snug. Small Plates (http://www.smallplates.com/) is at 1521 Broadway, near the Opera House, and has a nice selection of smaller, tapas-style dishes and a good martini menu. I think they're open pretty late but call to make sure. Traffic Jam & Snug (http://www.trafficjamdetroit.com/) is at 511 W. Canfield, near Wayne State University, and has an eclectic selection of food, including some vegetarian dishes.
Enjoy your time in Detroit!

are you going to be in the city or in the suburbs?

Lola's in Harmonie Park for a nice Happy Hour, GREAT drinks, good bartender, live jazz and pretty decent food.
Rattlesnake Club still has excellent food (even if Jimmy can't drive drunk so well). Slow's BBQ is fun with great food and an odd but cool patio. Perfect for casual group...good beer too! For ultra fine dining Cuisine is nice but lacks fun. Greek town and Mexican town are fun for visitors.... find the holes in the wall...much better than the BIG "favorites".
Russel Street Deli is great for sandwiches... in Eastern Market and cool to see that area (if you go early enough and they are still buying and selling).
Have fun!

Don't miss Giovanni's on Oakwood, probably the best Italian in the city. A bit of a drive but worth it. Check the board for a recent review, Mexicantown has many options including Evie's and Taqueria Lupita and Taqeuria Mi Pueblo. La Colmean Market (Honeybee) is a fantastic Mexican grocery store with outstanding homemade salsa, chips, guac and a decent take-out--we just had a great dozen pork tamales for dinner from there.
Al-Berdouni on Chase in Dearborn has the best mid-Eastern (esp. fattoush) I've ever had.

Irridescence and Bourbon Steak are well worth the visit.

Both of these places have been great options for my past trips to the D:
Ronin sushi in Royal Oak
Forest Grill in Birmingham
Other good places:
Camerons steak in Birmingham
Streetside seafood in Birmingham

if you want to do the woodward cruise head north to royal oak/ birmingham and go to Red Coat Tavern on Woodward... order the piedmont it is hands down the best burger in Detroit metro.
Downtown you should grab a pizza at pizza populous in greek town. Pegasus has to die for lamb chops and fine dining must be done at opus one.
Dearborn has the best middle eastern food outside of the middle east and more arabs in the world than other than the middle east... so all of the meat is top notch and butchered in town in muslim tradition.
