Specific Miami Beach Suggestions

Traveling early September with two children but need to eat well - will not have car but obviously can find transportation - but really interested in places just north of South Beach, preferably in the 20's and 30's - ethnic would be great but really just good food.

Ditto, ditto, and ditto. Note that Indomania's website says it's closed for the summer but reopening early September. In addition ->

Bond Street in the Townhouse Hotel has pretty good sushi (by South Beach standards, which are not high) as well as a short menu of cooked items, but its lounge-y setting may not be ideal for eating with kids.

Sultan, a cheap Middle Eastern place around 19th & Collins, always smells good when I walk by.

You are right on with your comments on bond. Sultan is good but not as good as my other suggestions (it is, however, cheaper). I would do it for lunch or after dinner if you are hungry. Note, that technically it is between 19th and 20th.
