Just north of Little Italy (NoLita I guess--I hate these acronyms), however, is Peasant, which is wonderful. I believe its very authentic Italian and the food comes straight from the wood-burning oven. Very lovely, intimate atmosphere as well, but unpretentious.

It is never specified that this person is avoiding a tourist trap or looking for a particular scene or anything. The person just wants good food at a good price in little Italy. Try Angelo's. Yes it is touristy but the food is amazing and the prices are not bad. Portions are good.

Angelos or Il Cortile.

You're going to be surrounded by tourists and pay a premium for that, but if you want that 'experience' these two will give it to you while serving decent food.

Yes, I should have made the inquiry you did the one time I made the mistake of eating in Little Italy. The place we ended up at had terrible food and was expensive to boot. As a board search will show, most, though not all of the restaurants there fall into the same category.

I agree, go elsewhere for italian food. It's now just a one block tourist trap (although you can get great chinese nearby).
