Baltimore Farmers' Markets

Charm City hounds, I'm a New Yorker visiting my parents this weekend and would like to visit a good farmers' market on Saturday morning (and, possibly, on Sunday). They live in Towson; how's the market there? And is there any shouldn't-miss market, like Union Square here in NYC?

Many thanks for any and all advice!

I have yet to make it to the new farmers' market at harbor east on saturdays but here is a blog about it (i couldn't find a site): http://www.skilletdoux.com/2008/07/ha...
the gist i've gotten is that it is run by a nonprofit, but on whole foods website they seem to claim it as well. let me know if you go, and if it's any good!

The Harbor East farmer's market is very small. I wouldn't think it would be much of a destination for an out-of-towner.

A better Saturday choice might be the Waverly farmer's market, although I haven't been to it personally. I generally go to the Sunday market under the JFX.

Agreed. The Harbor East farmer's market only has about 6 or 7 vendors and is probably not worth the trip for a visitor. JFX, on the other hand, is just about as good as it gets. Don't miss Migue's Magnificent Mini Doughnuts!

The Waverly market is decent, if small. Lots of herbs and flowers, not a lot of meat selection (not that looks reputable anyway)

The real attraction for the Harbor East market is Springfield Farms, but everything else I buy at the Baltimore market. I wish they'd just show up there.

Wow. Thanks everybody. I will definitely go to the JFX market on Sunday and, since it is close by, I'll try out the Towson market on Saturday. Again, many thanks.

I've not been, but have passed by the Towson Farmers Market. I think it's a really small affair, and occurs during the week, I think Wednesday, so that wouldn't work for you.

But, a hearty third for the market under the JFX. If you want a local delicacy, wait in the long line for pit beef.

And, double good timing since such great produce is in now!

            ((Beaten to the punch.))

I'm particularly partial to the farmer's market under the JFX (I-83) on Sunday mornings. I'm fairly certain it's one of our largest. There are lots of stands: good produce, plants, bakeries, etc. One of the great things about the market is the food you can buy and eat while you walk around. Popular places include: the coffee stand, the donut guys, the omelette guy, the crepe guys, mushroom lady (my personal fav), and the pit beef guys.

            Hope you enjoy.

Good timing! Here's a review from this week on the downtown Baltimore market, which convenes on Sunday mornings:
