Quiet watering hole with craft beer?

twitchology Aug 1, 2008 04:35 AM

Hey everybody, I have a bunch of reading and writing to do today and would like to do it someplace quiet with a strong AC and good beer. Any ideas?

Wasn't certain where you are located, but here are some Cambridge side ideas. While the Cambridge Brewing Company gets pretty crazy at lunch time, 90% of that is relegated to the patio in Summer, so until about 4pm you could find a quiet place inside there. When it starts getting loud you could move to Atwood's on Cambridge st, which I believe opens at 3:30. In Harvard, Casablanca is open for lunch and pretty quiet, but not necessarily "craft" beers. Charlies a bit more interesting for the beer, not certain if its quiet enough at lunch. John Harvard could also be a possibility at the far end of the bar if you like their beers. Cambridge Common between Harvard and Porter has a lot of beers on tap, if the music is too loud there are other options heading North.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm in Brookline now.

One bonus in working at the CBC -- it has free wi-fi. Not that this helps you in Brookline, but just thought I'd mention it.

It can be debated whether internet access actually facilitates work, but maybe not in this forum.

I couldn't agree more with your recs, itaunas, especially Atwood's.
The Casa B, that's the Casablanca to you none Boomers, doesn't have much to offer on tap, maybe six brews, but no more. That being said, there's good mixology going on there in a very cool (in both senses) and serene environment. It truly is an oasis in Harvard Square.

Deep Ellum in Allston comes to mind. Excellent beer list. I'm not sure what their hours are, but if they are open during the day I can't imagine it would be too loud inside.

They're certainly open by midday, because they serve lunch. I love Deep Ellum, though I haven't been in far too long, but I wouldn't call it quiet, especially at the moment with demolition/building construction going on immediately next door. They have great taste in music, but they often play it pretty loud. They do have a patio out back - that might be quieter, except for the aforementioned construction.

O'Leary's in Brookline has a nice selection of beers, particularly Boddington's (one of my personal favorites). It's pretty quiet place, and great staff working there.

Unfortunately the Publick House isn't open in the afternoon, it used to be on weekends and it was quiet and great. The Union Grill has good beers, AC, and would be quiet after the lunch rush, others would be: Miracles of Science and Audubon, either Bukowski's, The Other Side, the Lower Depths, Jakob Wirth's, Matt Murphy's, the Burren, etc....
