Review: Zeke's Smokehouse (Montrose)

Had the pleasure of dining at Zeke's in Montrose for the first time on Tuesday night.

It was a smaller space than I anticipated, although, I didn't spend much time inside. It was a bit stuffy and warm in the restaurant so we opted to sit at one of the tables on the sidewalk - which worked out just fine - perhaps not the greatest view (looking at the fronts of parked cars), but pleasant for a summer evening (and, I noted as we were leaving - the metal patio chairs are much more comfy than they appear to be!).

My dining companion and I shared a beef brisket sandwich w/ side of beans, a bowl of mac n' cheese, and the hot fudge sundae.

Beef Brisket Sandwich: Nice, thick slices of meat - very tender and succulent. I can't recall if it came with any bbq sauce already on it - but they bring over a trio of sauces - a mustard based one, a spicy one and a regular one. I preferred a combination of the spicy with just a touch of the regular - ... and, come to think of it, didn't get around to even trying the mustard one (next time!).

Side of Beans: These were fine but nothing to write home about. Just your standard beans with some pork in it. I'll be trying another side, on my next visit.

Mac n' cheese: A winner! It arrived on the table just glistening with cheesy goodness. It didn't disappoint. It was a decent sized bowl and had a nice consistency. It was a very satisfying dish - as it should be!

Hot Fudge Sundae: Delicious hot fudge, two scoops of vanilla ice cream and a light, homemade-style whipped cream. (I was wishing this was a brownie hot fudge sundae, though!) It was as exciting as a 'plain' hot fudge sundae could be. They have a bread pudding on the menu that I'll be trying next time!

They have a very minimal and inexpensive wine selection (one option per varietal and only White Zin, Chardonnay, Cab, Merlot and Syrah) - I was surprised there was no Red Zinfandel available.

All in all, a very pleasant and satisfying first visit. I'll be back to try their ribs!

The damage: for the above plus a glass of merlot, pre-tip: $35 - very reasonable IMO.

  1. Good review!! I recently went to Zeke's West Hollywood location and enjoyed it very much. I had the Hot Links (grilled and sliced) for an appetizer and the Pulled Pork Sandwich. I would definitely go back.

    1. Once you accept Zeke's is not Phillip's, it's great. The BBQ may not be the best in town, but it makes for a pleasant meal when you want some BBQ and a comfy booth.
