Union Square Thai?
any reports? I'm not a big fan of the other union square thai so I'm hoping for better!

Got the pad thai for a quick take-out from Sweet Ginger - it was decent, three shrimp that were just a hair past cooked, a few pieces of chicken, the noodles were very "wet" but there was a good amount of chopped peanuts on top. A few sour (good) notes in the sauce - Fine if fairly typical pad thai. Better than average all in all.

I don't know if we're supposed to make new threads in the Food Media section for Globe reviews but I figured that since there's not a lot of threads about Sweet Ginger then I'd put it here

I'm definitely not a Thai authority, but stopped in for lunch yesterday and enjoyed it. Nice atmosphere inside; I had a lemonade (not memorable) and basil chicken fried rice. Thankfully, it had some spice to it (I think a chile pepper or two were next to it on the menu) and tasted good.
I'll be back to try other options. No alcohol, but I heard them tell someone else bringing your own is fine.

I got takeout from here last night. It's nice inside with a pretty open kitchen. It looks like a family affair with the mother wearing a hairnet and standing over the big wok. kind of reminds me of growing up. I wanted to keep things simple and ordered pad see ew with pork, the massaman curry with chicken, and the grilled beef salad. Note that what they have for a grilled beef salad is actually a salad with beef on it, not yum nuea, the traditional one. Their menu is very directed towards the western tastes, but rightly so being Union Square. The curry had a lot more coconut milk and less peanut than I'm used to for massaman, but I thought it was passable. The pad see ew was good, if a touch on the sweet side. The beef salad was decent, pretty much sliced beef mixed with chili sauce with sliced red onions on lettuce. Tasty, not super authentic, but tasty.
I like this place and will definitely be trying more of their stuff.

Don't know about the "western tastes" = Union Square idea....With the various ethnic markets (Korean, Brazilian) and authentic restaurants (Buk Kyung, Wu Chon, etc.), it should be one of the more likely areas to find non-western chow. I wonder if you can order the real beef salad off-menu - even the little Thai place on Highland, Lemon Thai, gives the authentic version a try. And that's halfway to Davis! ;)

Haven't been to the new place yet. It's on Bow St, across from Bloc 11, and is called Sweet Ginger. Looks like they're, uh, still working on their website: http://sweetgingerunionsq.com/
Disagree w/you on Great Thai Chef though, right in the square. It's consistently good, if standard, fare. Used to be a better to my mind, but they Americanized the menu a bit (No more fresh rolls. Gaa!!). Nice folks.
