Thanks Professor Salt (and Russkar) for recommending Gabbi's in the Orange Circle.

The skirt steak...and churros with carmel and chocolate sauces (for dessert), were delicious! I almost can't believe this is an OC restaurant--was that good! (:)) Highly recommended.

Let's not get too down on OC. Gabbi's is really good and I love the location (grew up down the street). It has a homey feel and the quality of the ingredients is really good.

There is a lot of great food in OC. I"m proud to say there is more good ethnic food there than when I lived there. There is a lot more diversity these days. Just stay out of the areas with all the chain restaurants.

I don't eat there as much as I used to, but at the time I would put any Santa Ana taco shop up against any LA place. And for Vietnamese, we drive down there about every other week because the food is that good.

I am really pleasantly surprised by this place. I went there due to the lure of fresh churros, but I actually liked the other items we ordered better.

First of, the salsa and the chips were done just right. The chips were hot and crispy, not too thick and seasoned perfectly. The salsa was better than most. A bit spicy, but so additive that I kept scooping up more and more salsa even though my mouth was on fire. We got the guava magarita, which was good.

We ordered the mole enchilada, and the squash blossom enchilada. They had a kiddie size beans and cheese burrito, which my son ordered. The mole was not cloyingly sweet, and had good spicy notes and a hint of bitterness (I am bitter sensitive). It's not as good as the one I had at Tucson, but the best of of the ones I tried in LA. The squash blossom enchilada had a good sauce, but tasty enough though it was, it would be even better without the chicken. The chicken was OK - it's simply shredded white meat chicken, with somewhat subtle spicing.

The churros was very tender - the first piece I tried fell apart lengthwise. Maybe a little bit too mushy in the middle for my taste, and too much cinnamon-sugar coating. I am still seaching fo the little crunchy churros I sampled at Tijuanna a while back. The chocolate sauce was a tad bitter for me.

I will definitely go back, to sample the taco conchinta pibil (the tortillas appears to be fresh made), and the quesadilla huitlacoche.

Lastly, while the service is good, it was very leisurely, and the kitchen was slow. This place is not for someone in a hurry. They don't take reservations either, but have a priority list system (call ahead 4 days before for a Fri/Sat).
