Can't Miss Places

I'll be heading to Berkeley/San Fran for a vacation in August and am looking for "can't miss" places to eat -- they can be fancy or casual, hole-in-the wall or well-known, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, all-American or ethnic, etc. Basically, if it's a place you love in the Bay Area, I'd like to hear about it! Many thanks in advance.

I love (and would suggest to an out of towner) Zuni, Aziza and Ame. Your question is so broad, it is actually hard to answer! Have you been to SF before? How long will you be here? Do you want East Bay or SF places or a balance of the two?

My hands-down favorite Mexican restaurant is Tommy's out at 20-something & Geary: the best margaritas in the city plus wonderful meat dishes, like fajitas & carne asada & whatever adobo or Guatamalan dish is the special. It's a lively mixed crowd and the prices are moderate. Parking is really, really hard--unless you get lucky! Fortunately the #38 Geary bus goes right by. Do not bother with the enchiladas, etc unless you are vegetarian.
      Enjoy our city!

Something I know you can't get in DC or NY is proper Mexican taqueria food. Go to La Taqueria for the best carnitas this side of Michoacan and Taqueria San Jose for great tacos al pastor.
