Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Vietnamese/Thai grocery store in the area?

I have just moved here from Houston. I'm on a search for a southeast asian grocery store. I'm interested in finding vietnamese and thai condiments. The places I've been to sells, predominately chinese products and lacks vietnamese and thai products. I am more than willing to venture to any borough, if that's what it takes. Any reccommendation for specific store or neighborhood would be great.

There's also another store on Bayard Street that I just can't remember the name of. They have some SEA products.

            1. Funkjester just had an *awesome* post on Thai ingredients like kaffir lime, curry paste, etc:

Wow; that is some posting by Funkjester. Outstanding! Its funny, I've been wanting to get to Bangkok Market for the past couple of weeks to get a particular Thai curry paste that they import from BKK. It still hasn't arrived but I can't wait to get down there and load up on some items. Thanks.

Those Nittaya curry pastes are wonderful! So much better than Mae Ploy and the others people rave about, which I can't stand because they taste way too salty and unidimensional.

                    2. within the Chelsea Market

                      Chelsea Thai Wholesale

There is a very small selection of groceries at this market. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. The food is good, tho.

                          • There's a fantastic little jam packed hole in the wall spot in Chinatown on Mulberry St, between Canal and Bayard (just a few doors up from Bayard). They have a great selection of goods from all over Asia (including India), but I believe it's primarily a Thai market. I stumbled upon it in my wandering around Chinatown one day and never forgot where it was... then years after I started shopping there I was chatting with a Thai co-worker of mine who said it was her favorite store for Thai staples.
