Check out SakeBomber Sushi & Grill in Tempe on Broadway/McClintock. Great sushi and fun atmosphere with a bar.

Do you want great sushi or a "party" ambiance? Both are close together in oldtown Scottsdale. Ra has good sushi and has a "see/be seen" party ambiance. See Saw, 7133 East Stetson, has Nobu - and he's been the standard for sushi in the Phoenix area since ... forever. Simply amazing menu - but not inexpensive [he can match his menu with wine for you as well]. Best of both worlds - Sushi on Shea [just west of Scottsdale Rd. on Shea] - great food, room for a group - not as expensive as See Saw.

Really? They have wicked cheap happy hour deals, but I'd put Kona below Ra. And has anyone else noticed that they are located in the parking lot??!!! At the mall?!! Yet are considered a hip spot?!! It baffles me every time I see their bar packed. On a more helpful note, if you go during happy hour, it's hard to find room for 4, much less a big group, so send someone ahead to get a spot. If you sit in the restaurant, there's no HH specials and mostly families, no people watching. Or, like JK said, spend that 20 minutes driving to Sushi Eye in Motion!!

It's outside of your requested area, but Sushi Eye In Motion down in downtown Chandler is really good if you want to sit at the sushi bar but have a big group; the bar at the end down near the entrance doubles back on itself. The sushi there is absolutely phenomenal, definitely worth the extra drive. I haven't been to the original Sushi Eye which is in Tempe (Elliot west of Kyrene) but have heard nothing but great things.
Skip Stingray and Ra. Both are sushi for gaijins (foreigners) who care less about eating sushi and care more about being *seen* eating sushi. Stingray is especially egregious; the first (and definitely last) time I went there, the sushi rice was warm and didn't have nearly enough vinegar on it. The decor and menu descriptions (calling teriyaki chicken donburi "Round Eye Chicken"? Good grief!) were culturally insensitive to the point that if I was of Japanese descent, I would have walked out without ordering anything.

Off the top of my head: Sapporo's in North Scottsdale, Kyoto in Old Town Scottsdale, Kabuki in Tempe. Then there are also Ra's in all 3 areas.
