I "googled" and discovered one, which purports to be from Maida Heatters Best Dessert Book Ever (which I do not own). Its called "Tropical Lime Ice Cream" and couldn't be simpler...h-m-m, almost too simple...

Any Chowhounds ever tried the one in the book? or do you have an alternative?

I am throwing a backyard BBQ with an Indian flavour and thought I'd end with this.

I think you could make this with lime instead of lemon and it would be excelllent, and it is also very simple yet very tasty:

I made a great lime ice cream last year. It was really simple, too. I used 2 1/2c milk, 1 can sweetened condensed millk, a pinch of salt and 3-4T fresh squeeze lime juice. The lime juice "thickened" the mixture like a custard, and I poured it into my ice cream maker. It was surprisingly creamy and delicious.

Both sound great! I will let you know how I do> bflocat: would that can of sweetened condensed be the "short" stack kind? (sort of half the size of a regular can of, say, peaches?)

I know it sounds like a dumb question: I live in Canada and we have Eagle Brand in the "short" size, I suspect that's the same.

Thanks to all who helped out: I will let you know where this goes.
