Dinner near GCT?

  • 6

A dear friend is coming in from CT for Friday dinner and had suggested the following: Cafe 50 West, Alma Grill & Capitol Grille. I've not been to any of these, and since baby #2 get out less frequently and don't want to waste a meal out on mediocrity. She is not an adventurous eater, and doesn't care for fish or cheese. Sigh. Any suggestions? I'd like to keep it nearish Grand Central in order to maximize our time together. A non-child friendly place is swell as for once I will have none with me!

  1. Of the three you mention, the only one I've heard of is Capitol Grille, and I believe it's a chain steakhouse.

My pick in that area would definitely be Convivio, fka L'Impero. Though I've yet to go to Convivio, we had two superb dinners at L'Impero since Chef Michael White took over there, and all reports thus far about Convivio are that his cuisine remains top-notch! Plus, Italian is always a good choice for non-adventurous eaters. The decor has been changed, and from photos I've seen, it's very attractive. Convivio is located on Tudor City Pl., b/t 42nd & 43rd Sts. The website is still under construction, but the menu is on MenuPages.

    Enjoy and Buon Apetito!

    1. While I might catch some grief from fellow hounds, I think Metrazur surprises to the upside, is as good as capital grille, and you can't get closer to GCT. Actually leaving the building, I like Nanni for traditional italian. Have yet to try Convivio, though.

I was going to to recommend Metrazur as well. Who gives it a bad rap?
Another possibility in the nabe would be the Library hotel restaurant, which used to be called Branzino and is now called something else.

Metrazur is one of those restaurants that gets the "what have you done for me lately?" treatment.
Madison & Vine is the name of the resto downstairs in Library Hotel...haven't tried the food yet, but the rooftop lounge is nice.

Yea that's a good option. It's called Madison and Vine now.

        2. Patroon isn't a far walk from Grand Central. There is also Salute which I hear is good. What about DB Bistro.
