Little complicated but I am a expatriate Australian of Lithuanian/German parents. My parents always bought these HUGE round large tins from the local Delicatessen located in Cabramatta which is town in Sydney. These Herrings came from from Bremen, Germany I believe. Mum would take the herrings and place them in jars where they would last forever in the fridge. They were in a oil (unknown what kind). I don't know whether the oil was in the original can or my mum added it in the glass containers. I love this stuff especially with onions, tomato and Lithuanian "Black Bread" which was called/made by Riga bakeries in Sydney. These herrings are packed in Omega fatty acids etc and combined with the oil (possibly Olive) are a great way to eat healthy without chaffing down supplements daily.

I am looking to find a store in the Washington DC Metro area (preferably in VA) that carries herring fillets etc. I know you can get the Vita brand anywhere (Giant, Safeway etc) but these are in Wine sauce or sour cream or vinegar (rollmops) which I don't care for.(No offense to those who do). I have found possibly some New York based distributors of Flaum Schmaltz Herrings in 7.5 oz containers but I would prefer to buy locally and save on the shipping costs.

If anyone knows of a store or distributor, please reply/post on this board.

Definitely place a phone call to The German Deli on Lee Hwy in Fairfax, VA and tell them exactly what you've shared with us. Regardless of the outcome of the phone call, definitely make a trip to the deli or its newer, larger sibling in Bailey's Crossroads for some amazing brats and other treats.

If you have no luck with the deli, I suggest you call the German consulate and ask them for their advice. It's possible someone from the consulate/embassy loves the herring from Bremmen as much as you do and has found a source. (Incidentally, one of the joys of living in the DC area is local phone call access to all manner of expert information.)

Not sure where you can buy it, but if you need a quick fix Le Vieux Logis in Bethesda imports pickled herring from Denmark regularly. It's my husband's favorite appetizer and is served with a shot of aquavit.
