Hey people. This weekend me and a ton of friends are going to the Gathering of the Vibes festival in CT. We are going from Thursday to Sunday and will be camping there the entire time. You are pretty much allowed to bring in whatever you want, however there is a STRICT no bottle policy, I saw this rule mercilessly enforced last year. Looking for some canned beer recommendations. Gonna bring some Murphy's, Guinness, Cheap canned stuff to sell/give away. Any ideas?

If you wanna check it out the festival website is here www.gatheringofthevibes.com

Between Oskar Blues (Dale's Pale Ale, Old Chub) and Sly Fox (Pikeland Pils, Phoenix Pale Ale, maybe the hefe and dunkel if you can find them) you should be pretty well covered- not too hard to get in NJ. Enjoy!

I'll second TongoRad's Sly Fox recs and note that in central Jersey, the beers have recently been re-stocked after a time of them being either unavailable or of dubious age.

The new batch of cans (at least, the Pikeland Pils and the IPA) now have "Best By" dates stamped on the bottom edge of the can. Date codes had previously only been on the cardboard tray after they switched to the plastic rings, so once stocked on the six pack shelves, there was no way to tell the beer's age. (Prior to that, the beer can in very nice 12 pack sealed and dated boxes.)

Pilsner Urquell is available in half-liter cans in NJ, but a lot of retailers aren't carrying it and those that do seem to have old stock past the "best by" date (at least that's been my recent experience looking for it during these past weeks of heat and humidity).

For cheap stuff to give away, pick up some of the various Yuengling beers- not available in New England, so it'll seem exotic for some. (Apparently and inexpicably, the beers have a cult following).

AND, since you're going to Connecticut, I'd save room in trunk for some of the canned beers from New England Brewing Co. which aren't available in NJ. Have only had the "Sea Hag" but remember it as a very nice canned IPA. I vaguely remember having the Elm City Lager and Atlantic Amber many years ago, but I think that dates from an earlier incarnation of the brewery.

I think they had to change the recipe on the NEBC Sea Hag due to the hop shortage. I had a little sample at a recent beer fest and it was ok. I prefer their Elm City Lager though - I haven't seen it in my area in a few years, but had a couple of samples at the fest and it was just as good as I remember it.

I'm not sure of the availability of it on the East Coast, but Maui Brewing Co. puts out some of their beers in cans. No aluminum aftertaste at all and the beers are really good.
