Raspberry Picking near Toronto

Has anyone been this year? Any recommendations of places to go or not to go?

  1. Have you tried whitmores?

    1. Went on Sunday, to a lovely little organic place near Markham:

They have four varieties there: two red, one purple, and a teeny plot of white. When you pull up, there's one patch in front of you and a bit to the left, and another, just past some dwarf apple trees, on the right. I'd recommend starting with the latter - those berries were sweeter, and there were more of them.

Be advised that the abnormally high rainfall has been bad for the raspberries - lots of them have gone mouldy on the cane, and they aren't as plump as they've been in other years. That said, I'm definitely glad I went, as they are by far the best I've had this summer.

Do you know when the season ends? I've only had raspberries twice and am afraid I might have missed it.

I was also up at Organics Farm on Sunday and got some great berries. They told me the season usually lasts 6 or 7 weeks (and it started a couple of weeks ago). They also have great fruit pies (cooked in a wood buring oven) on the weekends, but you need to arrive early for the pies - we got there around 3 pm and they had sold the last pie 5 minutes earlier.

Not sure, but they record a message on their answering machine every morning, reporting on the picking conditions, so if you check it the morning you're thinking of going, you'll know what your prospects are.

And for what it's worth, there were heaps of berries still ripening on the canes, so I'd think you've still got time.

        2. Was at Whittamore's on Sunday. There were lots of raspberries, ripe and delicious. And for $3 a pound it's a steal!

Looks like they are still available for another week.

          1. just got back from picking:
on King-Vaughan Road between Jane St. and Keele St. (just south of King City)
            AWESOME berries!

i also went to whittamores on Sunday!! I noticed a lot more bugs this year than in the past (ive been going there for atleast 10 years). I even mentioned it to the cashier. She replied that they have been using less pesticides. When I got home...I rinsed...and that did NOTHING to those bugs. Then I soaked them in the sink and still saw a few live ones. Then I added vinegar...
then I litterally went one by one. The good rasp. lemon muffins are delicious!! (and bug free)..LOL
              Happy Picking!!

I went to whittamores yesterday and there were a lot of bugs in the field but I haven't seen any in the berries.

The season is still on and the berries are good for anyone interested.

              2. re: popover

Edgewood Farms on King-Vaughan Road have the best berries, and despite the winter this has been the biggest crop! No bugs or mould on the berries we gathered (some we purchased pre-picked.) And the owners are very friendly.

Once you drive up the driveway, swing left and drive past the barn and you'll see the parking area and the berry patch.

Hint: the quickest picking may be had by dropping down on your knees and harvesting the berries that others have missed.
