Traverse City Challenge: Foodies w/ kids

My family will be spending a week in Traverse City in August. We have never been in that part of the country. My wife and I are minor foodies. Our preschool-aged children are a little less interested in experimenting. As a result, we are looking for burger joints (or other kid-friendly spots) that we will appreciate too.

On an earlier thread, I came across mention of a Don's Drive-In with great shakes. That sounds like the sort of place the whole family would enjoy. If pasties are a local specialty, we will probably go for those too.

Any recommendations would be helpful.

  1. Not sure if you left for your trip yet, but a good burger joint in downtown TC is Bubba's. You could also check out Northpeak Brewery at the other end of Front St. Both would be kid-friendly, but with a twist. FYI - Bubba's has great Happy Hour specials (i.e. "Bubbatime" 3-5:30 every day you get 1/3 off your food bill).

Bubba's IS great. We were just there with our two pre-schoolers (1.5 and 3.5) and there was something for everyone. I loved the hot open-faced Turkey sandwich and had a great broccoli soup (not creamy, but very hearty).

I have heard that Don's is not what it once was, but it is probably worth a try for the burgers and shakes.

Mabel's for breakfast was fast and kid-friendly, with decent food. Kid's menu was a little pricey @ $4.99 for a kid's breakfast.

Poppycocks was good for lunch and it's right in town.

For a splurge, try Leelanau Country Inn for dinner. Great food and ok to bring the kids, but not cheap.

Finally, we had a delightful lunch at the Bluebird in Leland. Leland is about a 25 minute, beautiful drive. The restaurant overlooks a meandering river and is surprisingly kid-friendly.

      Have fun!!
