H&L Asian Market -- Charleston, SC

Has anyone ever eaten at the "restaurant" part of the H&L Asian Market on Rivers Avenue? They have a neon "Pho Now" sign that lights up in their window -- just like Krispy Kreme donuts!

Is it any good?

Anyone still considering this option should be brave and try the fresh spring rolls or PHo. No it isn't saigon good but in Charleston it stands up. Point to the menu when ordering! The bbq meats were less satisfying.

I haven't, but on a trip to H&L I asked the cashier what they sold there in the restaurant area. She said they only sold whole roast ducks to go. This contradicted my perception of the place and the sign you are seeing now in the window. Admittedly, there may have been translation problems in my conversation with the cashier, who spoke with a heavy Eastern European accent.

BTW, they sell frozen durian fruit at H&L out of a big freezer in the seafood (!) section. I can't help but think that the location of the freezer is telling. I wasn't brave enough to buy one.

Having lived in Singapore, I can tell you that keeping some distance from durian is a good thing!

I will have to swing by H&L at lunchtime during the week to see if the sign is lit and whether they sell anything but the ducks.
