Charlottesville Trip Report

I just got back from a quick weekend trip to Charlottesville, VA. A lot of time was spent going over previous postings from fellow chowhounds. All of the info was excellent and now it is my turn to add a little commentary on the places I visited.

My wife and I stayed at the Clifton Inn in the Thomas Randolph room (#2). We were very impressed with the Inn and the service was outstanding. The breakfast (included for guests at no charge) was excellent and the Eggs Clifton was hearty, decadent, filling, and I highly recommend them. The menu had about five or six items on it, changing each day. A basket of freshly baked croissants and pastries were also included. We did not have dinner at the Inn but did have a drink or two at the bar. The drinks were a little spendy but very good and they had some original sparkling wine cocktails.

Friday night dinner at the Continental Divide (thanks to all of your postings!) exceeded my expectations. We lucked out did not have to wait on a Friday night as there was room at the bar. It was loud but with good energy. The halibut Verde special was probably the best halibut dish I have eaten. Growing up in Alaska and fishing every weekend in the summer, this says a lot. The bison chili nachos were great and the tequila selection goes without saying. This place is not easy to find as the only sign out front says "Get in Here." We both highly recommend the Continental Divide.

Saturday night we went to Orzo. The food was very good but the service was bad. The bartender was unfamiliar with the flights of wine they were serving and the waitress was no help in the wine department as well. Overall, the food and the atmosphere were good, but the service was lacking.

We hit some wineries and Pollack was our favorite. We also stopped into Blue Mountain Brewery for lunch. The food was average and the beer was well below average. We tried a flight of 5 and only enjoyed the hefe weizen. The others were pretty bad!

Thanks so much for the report back! Good to hear about the good food all around. Unfortunate to hear about the service issues at Orzo, hopefully they'll get their staff more up to speed on the wines in the future, because I agree that the food has been good during my trips there. I'll have to put Clifton on my list for quick getaways and breakfast.

Glad it sounds like a positive trip!

Glad you enjoyed Continental Divide. That place has been a local favorite for many years.

I am very surprised at your experience at Blue Mountain. I was there Sunday, tried all the beers, and was very happy. The Dark Hollow (stout aged in Wild Turkey barrels) kicked butt. And while they do have two wheat beers on tap right now, neither is a hefe weizen.
