Mendy's comes to Midwood

In the old 'Essex House' storefront - next to The Orchard - on Coney Island Ave. betwee J&K - the new sign was unveiled ...I'm guessing this is the same Mendy's Jewish Deli that has a small restaurant in Midtown on 34th St. - Do they have other locations? Essex House moved to the old Caraville location on Avenue M. Went with my parents there last year and it was depressing and not good. Hope this is better. We need a good matzoh ball soup joint in the neighborhood.

I went to Mendy's on CIA last Friday for lunch and it was pretty bad. I had a pastrami & tongue combo, a hot dog and matzoh ball soup. The two things they all had in common was being bland and served luke warm. The pastrami was a cheap cut and the matzoh ball itself was made badly. I'm guessingthe tongue and hot dogs were Empire or some thing of the like.

I just noticed that myself on Saturday. Mendy's is also in the food court at Grand Central. I've had their pastrami and various soups there, usually half sandwhich and soup combo, and it is always good.

I didn't know that Essex had moved. I was only in there a handful of times and didn't like it compared to other kosher delis but it was close to home.

I've been told that the only thing worth ordering at Essex was the corned beef, which is apparently house cured. I've been meaning to try it for that reason.
