Korean shaved ice at the Springwater BookCafe
168 1st FL, Main Street, Fort Lee, NJ 201 242 9700, 201 478 0940
Last sunday i wanted to use up an old bus ticket, so took the 158 NJ transit bus from NY's Port Authority to Mitsuwa, just so happen to catch the Okinawan & Kyushu Food Festival there, then took the 158 bus again for about 5 mins and came to Main street and ate at So Gong Dong as I have been craving good kalbi as well as soft dofu stew. As i gathered my stuff to go back to manhattan, looking for the George Washington Bridge, i took a double take at thed Springwater Bookcafe ....shaved ice! They were closed at that point, and i just had to make another trip for some shaved ice! My trip home was a new route that involved a shuttle bus across the GWB, then subway home.
I couldn't wait to try the new route using public transportation. So today i went to Fort Lee via subway to GWB, and then the Vanessa Shuttle to Foret Lee. My early dinner at Mo Pho was so so , as the tendon and soft tender fatty bits in my beef combo pho was the highlight, but the broth was a bit sweet. I was happy to see the BookCafe was still open at this point. i asked the nice lady working there about the shaved ice.and got her to custome make one fore me (for my Taiwanese preferewnce) : so mine was w/out ice cream, but with red beans, mangos, little milk, the Korean grain powder, and mini rice cakes. It came in a deep glass plate _alleluia! I thanked her for that before even tasting anything, because shaved ice these days are served in either tallish plastic cup (impossible to get to), or worst yet, styrofoam (yuck)...but here, a properly dished shaved ice, finallly. Then i noticed the red beans looking like home made red bean soup with the beans still whole, not mushy mealy, not canned skinless glob..Happiness! The nice lady said that she cooked this at home, that it takes a long time. I was grateful to be sitting in this unique bookstore, surrounded by colorful korean books (if only i could read Korean!), and eating this delicious shaved ice that i can't get in Manhattan.
I think i've found my new hang out for the summer; early dinner at So Gong Dong (and Gam Mee Ok is a must since i love Sul Long Tang). .and then finish with shaved ice at this Springwater BookCafe. I even walked all the way across the GWB on my way home tonight.
