What Will You Be Drinking While Watching "Mad Men" This Sunday?
There's a lot of smoking and drinking going on in the HBO series "Mad Men" set at a New York Advertising Agency during the early 1960s (2nd season premiere this Sunday). Now, I gave up the former last year but still enjoy an occassional cocktail. Any suggestions for a drink to sip during the season opener of this show set during the time of camelot?
Thanks

I do enjoy watching all the drinking in that show, especially how much they drink at work. They always seem to have bottles in their offices, but they don't seem to mix with anything, so I just assume they are drinking scotch.
I started working in offices in the late 70's/early 80's and there was no drinking going on at work then, but there was a lot of smoking. My kids don't believe that you could smoke just about anywhere in those days. When did drinking in offices go out of fashion?

I remember Don Draper ordering old fashioneds in the first season.
I think that my choice for old fashioned cocktail would be the Jack Rose -- applejack, grenadine, lemon juice and angostura bitters. Shaken with ice then strained into a martini glass. It was the drink of choice for Errol Flynn -- so a little before Mad Men's time, but it was probably still around.
Also consider: a sidecar.

They do a lot of drinking on that show. I've spotted rye neat, whiskey highballs, Martinis, Manhattans, Stingers, Scotch on the rocks, bourbon neat, canned beer (opened with a church key), draft beer, Daiquiris, tiki drinks, Cuba Libres, and a water cooler full of creme de menthe. I'm sure I'm missing many more.
It's a school night for me, so I won't be drinking, but I do favor Don Draper's preferred tipple these days (straight rye), though I generally have mine with an ice cube or two, or in some Golden-Age cocktail.

If it's in the spirit of the show, you should probably be "sipping" blended scotch on the rocks. I think they drink bourbon as well, maybe even some Canadian rye, but really, it's about the scotch.
Also, to give credit where it's due, "Mad Men" is actually an AMC show. I know!
