Since you're willing to travel, the most authentic Indian food in L.A. is in Artesia's "Little India." Do a search on this board for "Artesia" and Indian" and you will get lots of hits. Off the top of my head, a lot of people like Woodlands for vegetarian food, and the India Restaurant is popular among those who insist on meat.

Tantra is in your hood and has good stuff, plus it's a hip hangout.

In Hollywood, it's a serious hole in the wall but I like Star of India on Melrose near La Brea.

In Pasadena, All India Cafe is not bad.

If you're looking for something a bit closer, Makkah Halal in Koreatown and in India's Flavor in Glendale are both liked on this board.
The Silver Lake choices -- Agra, Tantra, and Electric Lotus in Los Feliz, on the other hand, not as good.
Also a possibility is India's Sweets and Spices in Atwater -- it's vegetarian, cafeteria style, but the made-to-order dosas can be quite good.

My curret favorite is a small hole in the wall in Chatsworth called Tawakal Tandori which is primarily Pakistani fare. The dishes are prepared to order with great care and skill by Abdul the Afghani owner (who lived in Karachi, Pakistan for years) or by his kitchen staff as he keeps an eye on everything. Both meat and veg dishes are wonderful and when I ask for them to be prepared very hot/spicy, thats how they are served! I have listed a few other places where I've had good food as well.

My favorite is East India Grill on La Brea and Oakwood. The staff is always really really nice, they have outdoor seating, and the Korma is the best I've ever had. Also, complimentary rice pudding. Which I don't like, but they are so sweet that I take a few bites anyway.

the korma is really good there, the cashew creamyness is great, however other things on the menu haven't really lived up to the korma IMHO. I've been looking for good Indian near Downtown and haven't found anything, I'll have to check out those locations in K-town and one day make it out to Artesia...

My favorite is still Salomi in the NoHo Arts District, which was George Harrison's favorite Indian restaurant in L.A., fwiw.

It may not be super-authentic, but its good. I think there's a branch in the West Valley although I've never been.
