I'm looking for a cheap, quick place to get something to eat near the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley. The closer to PFA the better.

Thanks.

  1. how cheap?

    Le Petite Cheval
    Cafe Intermezzo
    durant food court
    pizza
    Looney's
    Top Dog
    Kips

    1. Or you could get a hot dog from the truck and sit on the grass.

I was wrong. When we got there at six last night desi dog was gone. I'm actually glad, though, because the avocado falafel and chicken shawarma from Sunrise deli were very good. We took them to the garden beside the art museum. A peaceful spot (people watching is over-rated) and a one minute walk across the street to the PFA.

Has anyone ever ordered the large stuffed lamb ($375) from Sunrise?

      2. Sunshine Deli for the best felafels in the area.

The tandoori dishes at Naan 'n' Curry are good.

        Second on Top Dog.

Fat Slice isn't great but it's a lot for the money.

Looney's barbecue is mediocre. Also it's not as fast, close, or cheap as the above places.

Anything more up to date on this topic? I seem to be batting zero. Adagia is closed--no idea if temp or permanent. Cafe Muse doesn't seem to exist.

          Thx

Sun Hong Kong on Durant, new chef's supposed to be good.

                Are they open at dinnertime?

                1. re: Robert Lauriston

I assumed since they were close to campus and not in downtown Oakland that they would have different hours. Their website has a phone #.

Not open last night, no hours posted yet.

What are you looking for? Henry's on Durant Ave. is a good sit-down place. Berkeley Thai House on Channing is also nice for a sit-down.

A cheaper option for sit-down include Cafe Milano further down Telegraph Ave. Good selection of pastas, sandwiches, and wraps.

Even faster is the new Brazil Cafe truck that's replaced the Desi Dog truck at the intersection of Bancroft and Telegraph. I think they still sell hot dogs too! The tri-tip sandwich is really good, especially with a mango smoothie. Maoz is on Telegraph Ave. for falafel and unlimited salad toppings.

Maoz was giving out tastes of falafel on the sidewalk yesterday. Really, really good. Maybe better than Sunrise.

                  1. re: Robert Lauriston

I used to go to Sunrise once a week for lunch. I think their falafel are tastier and more authentic, but I now go to Maoz instead because I like the veggie bar and prefer their milder falafel mix. Since they always cook to order, the falafel are always crunchy too.

I believe that Cafe Muse is closed for remodeling by the coffee company that had a coffee wagon parked just inside the gate on the Durant side.

Literally the closest to PFA is Le Petite Cheval, where I often go for lunch. I believe they are open until 8 and you might just see a PFA programmer there. Fridays during the summer they have been closing at 7.

Just a block or so further south, Top Dog is always a good, cheap, fast option. IMHO, the top is the fastest to cook, fast enough for an intermission snack. Uncle Dougie is just beyond the corner on Bowditch.
