Don't know Berkeley, but I like the Cheese Store of Silver Lake. A cheaper fallback would be Trader Joe's. Upscale markets like Bristol Farms and Gelson's?Mayfair have a good selection. Notwithstanding some negatives, Costco (there's one in Burbank) has a fair selection as well.

The cheese store in Silverlake is called Say Cheese. It's fairly close to Burbank. You would take the 5 south and exit Glendale Ave.

Actually, there are two different cheese stores in Silverlake -- Say Cheese on Hyperion and The Cheese Store of Silverlake, which is located on Sunset at Sanborn, next to Cafe Stella. Both are good, although lately I've been preferring the Cheese Store of Silverlake. Say Cheese has great sandwiches and I would recommend it more for breakfast, brunch and lunch.

You're fucked. I've lived in Berkeley and SF and now I'm in Glendale, so I know of what I speak.

Now that we got that clear, we can talk about places you can buy cheese in LA that will never, ever live up to the expectations you have developed in Berkeley.

A few of the Whole Foods markets make a marginal effort to carry a decent selection, but inventory is haphazard and the conditions of the cheese vary widely.

Moving out one distance ring is Cheese Store of Silver Lake. Search the board for commentary.

Finally, moving to the edge of your 45 minute driving radius (non-rush hour, that is) is the Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. It has far and away the best selection, storage conditions and service in the greater LA metropolitan area, but prices are far higher than you are used to.

La Brea Bakery next to Campanile also has a small but usually good quality selection, and many other temptations.

Good luck.
