Just got back from South America and spent a couple of nights in Montevideo - it was the weekend and everything was closed and I hated the city BUT I do recommend El Fogon in the centro, Tannat - really an awesome parilla/sushi place, very sophisticated and anywhere in the extraordinary Mercado del Puerto which was worth going to Montevideo for alone (try La Chacra there).
El Viejo y El Mar - out along the boardwalk to the east - it sits out on the water, looking over the ocean. Not the best seafood restaurant you'll ever eat in, but good.
And if you have a lunch free for something completely casual, you can't miss stopping in at one of the Marcos' Chivitos spots - a chivito uruguayo sandwich from them and a beer or soda are an experience not to be missed.
