One vegetarian, one kosher, 3 eat-it-all

Judith Skolnik Jul 23, 2008 05:37 PM

My husband and I and 3 adult children will be in Chicago in mid-August for 3 days. We'll be staying near N. Michigan Ave and Seneca Park. As you can see from the heading, dining can be a problem. Any great vegetarian restaurants or restaurants where we can get wonderful fresh fish? Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm assuming that the one who keeps kosher isn't "too" kosher. I know people who won't eat vegetables that might have been on the same grill that might have cooked non-kosher meat.

The first two restaurants that spring (no pun intended) to mind were created by the same chef, Shawn McLean. Spring in Wicker Park (about a $10 cab ride for you) is his fish restaurant; Green Zebra, his vegetarian place, is a tad closer to you, but still a taxi ride.

As you may already be aware, most of Chicago's fine restaurants, including the steak places have excellent fish and vegetarian offerings, so you shouldn't have too difficult a time ... again unless the food has to be prepared under strict kashrut regulations.

As the other poster you will find most places will have some vegetarian and fish dishes - My most favorite seafood restaurant in Chicago is Catch 35 at 35 W Wacker - for kosher really the choices are limiyed downtown - there is the Spertus Cafe and Meto Klub both are really aimed at lunch time crowd - the other kosher spots are in West Rogers Park (a neighborhood of north Chicago - about 15-18 cab ride) Taboun Grill which is quite good and Skokie, a suburb which is about a 30 cab ride
